Working with the Big Mart data was challenging and fun. I think this rich, full-bodied retail dataset demonstrates some fun aspects of human psychology, namely spatial habits of mind and spending patterns. With Big Mart you’re able to peer into the collective human brain when working with this dataset!

Goals in this analysis:

  • Impute any missing string or numerical values
  • Standardize mixed categorical values (fat, Fat, phat)
  • Encode text categorical values into numerical values
  • Calculate the ‘age’ of each outlet as a new feature
  • Prepare training and test data
  • Build a linear regression model to gain insight on the relationship between item visibility and sales of each outlet
