Faraday candle

With very few materials, students can make LEDs light up without batteries! Simply attach an LED to an entire spool of magnet wire, attach this to a PVC tube and drop a strong neodymium magnet through the tube and watch the LED light up. This demonstrates Faraday’s discovery that a moving magnetic field will induce an electric current in a conductor – the essential foundation of all our electrical power plants. Attach several PVC tubes together in series and you can make a longer candle.
