555 Audio Modulated 20kV Flyback

555 Audio Modulated 20kV Flyback

Audio Modulated Flyback Transformer pulsed DC high voltage using 555 timer         This is the circuit I followed.  The only changesI made were: – instead of 10k and 9k pots I used what I had on hand, I used two 50k pots.

Moon Replacement Mission

Moon Replacement Mission

My goal this semester was to do more open-ended “thought experiment” problem solving projects that develop student ideation skills rather than just offering plug and chug calculations as enrichment. I spent 4 days developing this latest project alongside Chris Duel and the kids ate it

Moon Globes

Moon Globes

This company Replogle makes novelty moon globes for an amazingly looooow price.  You can get one here.

I was given one as a gift and realized that there was a pretty good coordinate system printed on it, along with the locations of the Apollo mission and lots of visible landmarks.

This screamed “teaching tool” to me so I expanded on the coordinate system and made a sort of landmark treasure hunt activity where students would use coordinates to find landmarks or find landmarks and give the coordinates.  They would also develop a scale and convert into miles thereby allowing them to calculate distances and diameters of objects using string on a spherical object.  Yes, I am including the lesson in this, you’re welcome!

Lunar Dynamics Board

Lunar Dynamics Board

Astronomy topics don’t often lend themselves to many hands on activities.  Physics and Chemistry are well known for having lots of labs, but Astronomy has fewer in comparison.  One of my enduring goals is to make hands on activities for various Astronomy topics. When studying

Gravity Fabric

Gravity Fabric

When studying gravity it is critical that students understand more than just apples falling on Newton’s head.  The study of gravity can be mind blowing for students because you get to introduce the concept of the fabric of space and time and time dilation!  This simple

Fusion Games

Fusion Games

Fusion is another tough topic to teach using hands on materials.  There are plenty of simulations and diagrams.  I wasn’t quite sure how to really approach a standard method of teaching fusion.  The students have a pretty good idea of what is happening but I wanted to reinforce a few concepts using something hands on:

  • like charges repel (proton to proton interactions)
  • overcoming electrostatic repulsion (nuclear collisions)
  • what’s inside the nucleus
  • nucleosynthesis of higher elements up to iron
  • atomic mass, momentum and atomic number

I decided to have them make fusion games based on some of these concepts.  The results have always turned out pretty well.  Student creativity builds ownership of the learning and gaming is a fun way to deliver some much needed enrichment.

CD Galaxy

CD Galaxy

Navigating the galaxy with a CD Galaxy This fun hands on lesson shows students where the Sun is in the galaxy as well as other constellations.  Teacher leads students through the steps using Stellarium, or students can do this on their own.  It doesn’t really

Gung Ho Films

Gung Ho Films

Gungho Films is a media production company with three offices in China. They specialize in foreign media clients wishing to maintain a strong marketing presence in the region.  This site was migrated to WordPress from a previous outdated Flash version.  The client and I chose the versatile Themify Ultra theme so that management could do the updates to content themselves.  Before anything could be done the site content had to be moved to another host that supported an updated development environment.  Employee email was also migrated to the new host in a manner producing zero down time.

Maxwell House China

Maxwell House China

This was the winning design I made for the Maxwell House China website which included forums and a rewards system.  The client – Kraft Foods – wanted a “virtual coffee house” where people could talk about coffee since its introduction at that time was relatively
